Material Handling

Conveyors are used for transferring material from place to place in almost every part of a material handling system.  The encoder provides electrical feedback to the motor drive of the conveyor.  The encoder is used to calculate speed (tack) and provide positional information.

Our encoders are specially designed to be mounted either above or below the conveyor and ride on the belting.  They can also be mounted to the motor drive or idler shaft.

Tri-Tronics offers to this Industry many options that will work for several applications, the most popular or demanded Encoder series used in Material Handling are as follows:

MHI
HS

HS Series

Hollow shaft encoders are designed with either a through-bored shaft or a blind-bored shaft, and intended to mount directly onto a motor or other shaft. This eliminates the need for a shaft to shaft coupling and mounting adapter, resulting in both space and cost savings. The encoder "floats" on the motor shaft. A tether or flexible mounting bracket prevents the encoder from turning, yet accommodates shaft-to-shaft misalignment.

RH

RH or R Series "Wheeled"

An incremental encoder that uses precision measuring wheel(s) to directly measure the movement of a conveyor belt, or to accurately measure the moving material.

Wheeled encoders more accurately track the conveyor belt or other material than shaft encoders. Two problems with shaft encoders in this application are: (1) slippage of the conveyor belt on the roller, and (2) inaccuracy of roller diameters. Both of these contribute to inaccuracies that reduce the overall efficiency of a material handling sortation system or precision measuring system. Wheeled encoders ride directly on the moving material, use a wheel tread having a high coefficient of friction, and have a very low starting torque resulting in virtually no slippage of the wheels on the belt. In addition, the wheels are precision ground with exacting tolerances, versus a roller which has a much larger tolerance and its circumference seldom translate into an integral number of encoder pulses per unit of linear movement.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Tri-Tronics Encoders have the option to include our “Anti-Jitter” feature AJ. This was designed for conveyor and web systems, and especially material handling sortation systems, that require continuous and accurate measurement of the web's movement even if the system must be stopped and restarted without reset. These applications typically use a single output encoder or PPI for tracking the webs movement. When the web stops, and if there is sufficient vibration or back-and-forth movement, then the encoder output could oscillate, appearing as if the web were actually moving. This condition is referred to as "dither". The “Anti-Jitter” feature further eliminates “dither” by increasing the pulse hysteresis.
